6 For A 9

Made exclusively for co-exhibition with Barbadian artist Ronald Williams during the show 6 for a 9. A popular Barbadian idiom, “don’t tek a 6 fuh a 9” means to be observant of context and intention; be mindful of misinterpretations.

Ronald and I worked together in a large studio at Barbados Community College months before the show and that camraderie and immersion into each other’s art-making practice resulted in a subtle call-and-response body of work that encapsulated many dichotomies, including feminine/masculine, american/bajan, younger/slightly older, etc.

These 16"x20" collages — which were shown alongside “The Inklings” and 5-foot 3D collage, “Celine” — are on acrylic paper. Their titles are references to music I played while in the studio composing them, including songs from Aretha Franklin, Roy Ayers, Tori Amos, Beth Orton, and Sia.
