My Collages to Be Exhibited in Benefit of MoCADA Museum’s “My Collection Exhibition and Auction”

Two of my collages, Seraphina and Kimba, are among the works on view and for sale during the MoCADA Museum’s My Collection exhibition and benefit auction, which runs this May in Brooklyn. I’m proud to have my work included in this thoughtful and necessary initiative that supports the museum’s free community programming and ongoing growth into a new building, scheduled to open in Fall 2018.

The exhibition is presented in partnership with Joakim von Ditmar, Richard Beavers Gallery, and Projects Gallery. It brings together a curated selection of works donated by a cross-section of contemporary artists working across mediums and geographies. The goal is to engage new and seasoned collectors while highlighting artists whose practices reflect the vibrancy, experimentation, and depth of the African Diaspora.

From left: “Seraphina” and “Kimba” collages, part of series of work created for my first solo show, Written in the Body. Both pieces will be up for auction at MoCADA.

Seraphina and Kimba are pieces from a moment in my practice when I was leaning more into gesture and scale, experimenting with how color and silhouette hold emotional space. They speak to transformation and grounding, and I’m especially pleased to know that they’re part of an effort that extends those values outward—toward building, supporting, and sustaining an institution that has long championed Black art and artists.

MoCADA’s presence in Brooklyn is both foundational and expansive. It is a place that makes room for possibility. To be part of this benefit feels meaningful, not only because of where the proceeds are going, but also because of the community the museum brings together. I’m grateful to be involved and to contribute work toward this cause.
