The “Plural of He” Exhibition at Leslie Lohman

I am honored to be one of five artists featured in The Plural of He, an art exhibition honoring the legacy of gay Trinidadian activist Colin Robinson (1961–2021) and curated by Dr. Andil Gosine at New York’s Leslie Lohman Museum. The show runs from March 15 to July 21, 2024.

For the exhibition, I collaborated with Dr. Gosine in deep research of Robinson’s personal and career-spanning archive and developed Another Poem, a 30 x 44 in. mixed media collage that explores his impact on New York’s dynamic gay scene as an activist, immigrant, and beloved friend and carer.

Robinson’s poetry collection, You Have You Father Hard Head, became the emotional anchor for the piece. A particular photograph of him—posed in stockings, perched confidently on the arm of his couch—also left a lasting visual impression. That balance of intimacy and defiance was something I carried into the composition.

It was a pleasure to work with Dr. Gosine throughout this process. From visiting Robinson’s archives together in NYC to having long conversations about his political and personal legacy, the project offered a deep and meaningful point of entry into the emotional architecture of Robinson’s life. Our conversations often circled back to the people he loved, organized with, and cared for—a queer Caribbean lineage that’s too often overlooked or under-documented.

Exhibiting Another Poem at Leslie Lohman, a museum dedicated to LGBTQIA histories and futures, added another layer of resonance. I’m also proud that the work appears on the cover of the exhibition catalog, now available through the museum.
