Another Poem (2024)
Commissioned by Dr. Andil Gosine (York University)
For The Plural of He exhibition at Leslie Lohman Museum, New York
Overview
Another Poem is a 30 x 44 inch mixed-media collage on archival paper created for The Plural of He, a research-based exhibition honoring the life and work of Gay Trinidadian activist and poet Colin Robinson (1961–2021). The show opened at the Leslie Lohman Museum in March 2024 and ran through July.
Invited by exhibition curator Dr. Andil Gosine, I worked closely with him over two years to engage with Robinson’s personal archive and published writings. The resulting work responds directly to Robinson’s poem “HIV_FREE@50,” which addresses the emotional weight of surviving the AIDS crisis as a gay Black Caribbean man in New York.
Materials & Meaning
Created with painted and printed paper, ink, and archival elements, Another Poem visually reflects Robinson’s intersecting identities—activist, immigrant, poet, survivor. The composition centers a single seated figure surrounded by atmospheric layers that suggest both presence and absence. The work draws from Robinson’s own words and legacy, while imagining new ways to see him held, remembered, and witnessed.
Collaborators
Commissioned by Dr. Andil Gosine, Professor of Environmental Arts and Justice at York University, the work was part of a group exhibition at the Leslie Lohman Museum featuring artists in dialogue with Robinson’s legacy.
