Fairmont Royal Pavilion

Commissioned by Fairmont Royal Pavilion, Barbados In collaboration with Walsh Green Art Consultancy

Overview
In 2017, the Fairmont Royal Pavilion, a 5-star resort on the west coast of Barbados, commissioned two of my collage works—Scrap Museum No. 11 and Luce-Marie—for permanent display in 72 of its guest rooms. The commission was part of a full redesign of the hotel’s interiors, and aimed to highlight contemporary Barbadian artists working across a range of visual styles.

My work was selected in collaboration with UK-based art consultancy group Walsh Green. Framing was handled locally by Frame & Art Co., and 36 first-edition prints of each collage were produced in Barbados for the installation.

Materials & Meaning
Scrap Museum No. 11 comes from my 2016 Scrap Museum series—small-scale collages created using leftover materials from larger works. Originally constructed on 8.5 x 11 inch copy paper, this piece was enlarged for the Fairmont installation. The series emphasizes experimentation and improvisation, often produced within a strict 30-minute window to explore gesture and composition without overthinking.

Luce-Marie, by contrast, was created for the 2016 Quaternary group exhibition at NuEdge Gallery in Barbados. It is part of my ongoing exploration of Black feminist portraiture, using layered abstraction to suggest presence, identity, and interiority. While distinct in origin, both works share a commitment to fragmentation, reassembly, and interpretive openness.

The Fairmont Royal Pavilion described my contribution as “organic and abstract,” noting that “the abstract nature of the work means they are wholly subjective and can therefore be interpreted by different people in a variety of different ways.”
