Inklings
Composed in 2018, the Inklings series of collages started with a blob of black ink accidentally spilled onto a sheet of white watercolor paper.
Already immersed in creating colorful riffs on portraiture through series like the Cameos and My Girls, I challenged myself to three basic ink colors — forcing a re-adjustment of my collage gestures that had become muscle memory. What emerged is a different kind of narrative that, while speaking to the female perspective, also questions what it means to be obliterated, obscured, marked and, in some instances, how turning our backs to the audience can raise questions about who we are and how we are seen; even when we are not looking/engaging we are still on display.
”Inklings” are composed on 12in x 18in acrylic paper.
